Nearly everyone has used or at least heard of calamine lotion. The lotion has been popular for years and it is used by people of all ages but the question you might be asking yourself is “is it safe to use on a baby’s skin” and “how do you know when to use it?”
Calamine lotion can be very effective in combating skin irritation, skin inflammation and other skin problems in babies. Calamine lotion doesn’t usually trigger allergic reactions or have adverse effects, it is generally considered safe. However, it is important that you consult your baby’s doctor before using it on your baby.
When should you use Calamine Lotion on a baby’s skin?
You can use calamine lotion when your baby has:
- Excessively oily skin: because calamine lotion has mild drying properties.
- Localized or generalized skin itchiness (pruritis): The cooling effect of calamine lotion helps to combat skin itchiness.
- Heat rash: Calamine lotion helps relieve the prickly feeling of a heat rash.
- General skin irritation
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Chickenpox
- Insect bite
- Sunburn
How to apply Calamine Lotion on a Baby’s Skin
– Read all the drug information on the label carefully.
– Shake the bottle of calamine lotion well before use.
– Wash and dry the affected area before applying the lotion each time.
– Use a cotton ball, face cloth, or pad to apply a thin film of the lotion evenly.
– Allow the medicine to dry up.
– Apply a generous amount of lotion on the affected skin two to three times daily.
– If you miss a dose, apply as soon as you remember or apply the next scheduled dose.
Babies don’t usually react to Calamine lotion but, you should discontinue use if your baby exhibits the following signs:
Redness
Rash
Pus discharge
Difficulty in breathing
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
If your baby accidentally injests Calamine lotion, you should gently wipe their mouth and give them water to drink. Minor side effects if injesting Calamine lotion may include nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. However, if your baby has consumed a large quantity or is exhibiting major side effects, you should visit your doctor immediately.
Note that Calamine lotion is for external use only and should not be applied on open wounds, eyes, nose, mouth or genitals. Do not use Calamine lotion without consulting the doctor.
