Keep Your Baby Safe in the First Two Months – Part 2: Crib Safety

by admin
September 11, 2022
in PARENTING TIPS

September is Baby Safety Month, an awareness event sponsored by the Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association (JPMA), the industry organization for quality and safety in baby and children’s products. Baby and children’s products with the JPMA Certification Seal means that they have been sample tested at an independent laboratory and meet the highest standards for quality, safety, performance, and functionality. Baby Safety Month is a time when JPMA and supporting organizations work extra hard to educate families and caregivers on selecting safe products for their children.

When most people hear “baby safety,” they think of childproofing a house with outlet covers and cabinet latches. But baby safety encompasses all the ways in which parents and caregivers must work to keep a baby safe, including safe sleeping, feeding, car seat safety, and baby gear/products safety. In this three-part post, we want will introduce you to the safety priorities for your baby’s first two months of life, provide tips, and share resources to learn more. Today, we’re talking crib safety.

Crib Safety

Safe sleep is a top concern for parents with a new baby at home. Knowing how to keep your baby safe during sleep can reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death due to an unsafe sleeping environment. Knowing how to keep your baby safer will bring you more peace of mind, and hopefully, a little more restful sleep.

According to tips from the JPMA, the following are the most important guidelines for keeping your baby’s crib safe:

Type of crib

  • New
  • JPMA certified
  • Not recalled – check JPMA or the manufacturer’s website for recall information
  • Properly fitting mattress
  • Installed with the included manufacturer’s hardware only (keep instructions handy)
  • Install according to manufacturer’s directions; ensure there are no missing parts
  • Do NOT use a drop-side crib (they are no longer available to purchase new)

Crib bedding

  • Bare – tight-fitting crib sheet only
  • Remove all pillows, stuffed animals, blankets, comforters, toys, or anything other than baby and a tight-fitting crib sheet
  • Do not use extra padding underneath baby
  • Ensure the mattress fits tight within the crib – no gaps

Crib placement/environment

  • Ensure no cords (monitors, blinds, etc.) are within 3 feet of the crib
  • Place crib away from windows, heaters, drapes, blinds, and lamps

How to dress your baby

  • Consider swaddling until baby can break free or roll over
  • Use a sleeper, sleep sack, or infant gown to keep baby warm and safe
  • Don’t overdress your baby to prevent overheating

Future use of your crib

  • Keep and label all parts and the directions together with the crib when storing
  • Before re-using your crib, check the JPMA and manufacturer’s website for recall information
  • Do not reuse the crib if there has been a recall or if you are missing parts/pieces
  • If you can’t find the instructions, visit the manufacturer’s website or call their customer service number
